Daisy's home has undergone adaptations to ensure it meets her needs. She helped in this process assessing the ramp heights and choosing the wall colours and flooring, while her family transformed the garden. Daisy lives in a Reside property which will become Reside with Progress on 1 April.
“I love the new bungalow. It has a lovely garden where I’ll be able to party!” says Daisy.
Daisy’s family members live and work in the village. Her aunt and uncle live across the road from her bungalow, and her grandparents and brother are very close by. So it’s important that her first independent home is where she knows many of the locals.
Having a garden at her house is ideal for Daisy and her dog Belle. Her grandparents also have a dog, called Fly, who can come to visit. The open-plan design means Daisy can move easily in her wheelchair through her kitchen and lounge to her back doors, which then open out onto the patio in the garden. “The garden will be great for me to get around in my self-propelling standing frame; it’s known as the Rabbit! There’s also a play park nearby too where I enjoy taking my nieces in the summer.”
Daisy is a sociable, outgoing person with lots of friends. She attends a local drama group in Wetherby. She also goes to an arts and crafts centre close by, where she takes part in musical activities. “I love doing this and meeting up with my friends,” she says.
Daisy also goes horse riding and loves to visit the cinema and theatre but since the pandemic this hasn’t been possible sadly. One of her favourite performers is violinst Andre Rieu. She also regularly visits Fountains Abbey which is her favourite place for special days out.
Lockdown has been challenging as Daisy has been shielding, but with the support of Team Daisy it is hopeful that she will be soon back out here and enjoying life to the full. “Thank goodness for my iPad,” says Daisy. “It’s how I survived lockdown.” Daisy’s bungalow has been a great place as it’s meant she has somewhere to be with her support team that is safe. As Daisy can’t go out to many places at the moment due to her health and to keep her safe, she has enjoyed watching the building work and her new home take shape. She has been proud to share the news of the progress with her friends, family and neighbours.
